Beware of the Sales Pitch!
Beware of the sales pitch by the estimator. It's clear that this company knows what customers want, so they say without being asked that they will provide these services. They said that the my goods would be loaded directly onto the truck that would be doing my long distance move. When they arrived on moving day it was a small truck that was not going to be the interstate vehicle. I held my ground and had to wait 4 extra hours past the time that my goods were ready to load to make Summit keep this promise. I was told that different loads within the same truck would be separated by floor to ceiling plywood...this was not true! I was told that the same people who loaded my goods would unload them at my destination...not true! I was told that my mattresses had to be packed (I was charged for this) in special cardboard boxes...not true! I was told that I could select the day for delivery of my goods...in reality there is a 2 week window of time! Finally, when a few of the goods arrived damaged or destroyed, Summit Van Lines uses a third party claims shop, Moving Claims.com. It is a very onerous process: 1. Both sides of the entire bill of lading had to be copied, not just the portion that included the loss, as well as the contract and detailed letter of description, which all had to be sent certified mail. 2. Three verification steps followed. 3. Lastly a letter of acceptance of the resolution had to be notarized. I believe that all of these steps were to dissuade anyone from making a legitimate claim. The whole process took 4 months! I had moved 6 times prior to this by various moving companies, and any claims had been easily and fairly resolved within a matter of a couple of weeks. The people who actually loaded and unloaded the goods were fine. When I spoke with someone at the company about the claims process, I was told that I should be happy because almost all of my goods arrived intact. To me, this shows a lack of respect for the property of others. In closing, beware of the sales pitch!! If it is too good to be true...
